I used to have RR, but they moved out of Houston and now I have Comcast. Typical service call goes like this. On hold for 20 minutes after going through their voice mail system. Then you get a script kiddie. They know absolutely nothing about the service but they DO have a list of troubleshooting tips. The first thing they want you to do is to disconnect everything. For me that is a router and three computers.

Never mind that everything was working fine until it just decided to quit. Then turn off the modem and computer and restart. (BTW, cycling the modem may work, but if you have the phone service modem it has a battery in it that needs to be unplugged). Only then do they try to ping the modem. When they can't see it they MAY admit that the problem might be theirs.

Then they schedule service within 48 to 96 hours. I've had squirrels munching on the line and a bad connection every time it rained. The tech found the squirrel problem on the first trip, but it took 4 to get the rain problem fixed. Seems like every time they came out it wsn't raining so no problem

The one that really got me mad was when the tech? insisted that I disconect everything while I was trying to tell her that I could see the line lying in the middle of the road in front of my house. I got so mad that I agreed. Naturally, since there was no way they could get the modem to respond, I didn't do anything. Told her I would and to hang on while I crawled around. I waited ten minutes and then got back on the line and told her I was through. It took two days to get that one fixed.

I had some problems with Road Runner, but they did actually have real techs answering the phone. So if you have RR instead of Comcast, count your blessings.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
Broosbee on Place your bets......

My money is on them telling you they will be there between the hours of 12 and 6 PM. Internet down all day last Tuesday and then it popped back on for no reason. This was after 2 unsuccessful tech contacts with BrightHouse. On Friday it went down again. After going through 4 techs the last one finally decided my modem was bad and set up an appointment on Monday to switch out the modem. The connection popped back on again Saturday morning. My existing modem was an Arris, but they brought a brand new Scientific Atlantic 2203c (Cisco). Everything seems to be fine with the modem, but I'm only getting 11-12Mbps out of a 20Mbps service. Now I'm waiting for Linksys support on this issue. Man it never ends.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
angus1949 on Place your bets......

I have Time Warner Cable with Digital Basic, 2 DVRs, and Roadrunner. I also have regular phone service (Embarq with 2 lines - formerly Sprint) and Verizon Wireless.

When RR was first installed, the Tech (idiot) placed an internal splitter to go to TV and RR, which brought the signal below the RR modem's threshold. The second tech (smart) who had to come and fix idiot's screwup(s) had a few things to say about those internal splitters. He replaced the main splitter outside to add another connection, and with some work, found the best position for the RR cable, which goes into the basement, along with a separate line for CATV. Three TVs: basement recreation room, back bedroom, and family room. At this point the cable modem was a Toshiba PCX1100U 10 mbps, which worked fine for several years.

Since then most repair calls have been due to totally insane gray squirrels with an appetite for cable insulation. The last RR repair call was that far too many packets were being dropped. Most of this was between the pole and the modem, and the modem, with some down the line from the pole. I even got the modem upgraded to a 100 mbps.

When the contractor came and installed the DVRs, he did everything right, but, I was having problems. It turned out that the main external splitter was on the flakey side (durn intermittent problems) and got replaced. Everything has been fine since then.

Most tech calls I make (rare) for RR, get bumped immediately to tier 1 (actual systems tech - UNIX admin), since I use multiple OSes and those problems show up in all of my OSes. The ones who take the initial call know that it is beyond their ability and hand me over to tier 1. Sometimes it is limited to the blade I am on, sometimes not, sometimes I simply have to reset my router and cable modem.

For me, Tech or repair calls are very rare.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
Sarissi on Place your bets......

Lantec:

the fella used a 6 instead of a 9 (haven't got a clue what that means)

Most likely the number 9 cable has more shielding and the material
of the wire is better too. The last free version 1.3 is available at oldversion.com...
I do have CCleaner but do not use it for Reg cleaning for this reason.

It's My Secret

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
MySecret on Files Names in Thumbnail view

your welcome if you go to the fourums they have some pretty amazing skins there such as azenis moddled after the one by jj ying

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
orgnlprankster77 on Skinning the Smartphone

here i have the link to the website!! http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/wisbar/

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
orgnlprankster77 on Skinning the Smartphone

go to goole and type in WISBAR i use it to skin my windows mobile 5.0 pda its a great program

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
orgnlprankster77 on Skinning the Smartphone

Or this site.... http://www.tekguru.co.uk/phpBB2/index.php

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
BoXXi on Skinning the Smartphone

Not sure what you mean, but does this help? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/smartphone/personalize.mspx#changehome

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
BoXXi on Skinning the Smartphone

There's a book available called Real World Bryce 4 by Susan Kitchens. The material on Bryce 4 will carry over to Bryce 5.5 very well (most of that didn't change). The new material added in Bryce 5 (Tree lab and metaballs) aren't covered, but they're pretty well a) self-explanatory, b) semi-well covered in the manual or c) well covered in online tutorials.
Yeah, I remember when everyone was using Photoshop's lens flares left and right. Not to mention plastic wrap.
But yeah, learning any high end program these days isn't an overnight thing. I usually screw around with a few of the more basic features, and then explore the program and find a few new things to play around with. Of course, doing this with a program like 3d StudioMax would take ten years, but that's another story.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
Adamness on Bryce, Blender, Vue, Terragen, etc. ???

I might be in over my head.
Just run through the manual to get a feel for the tools, and do the tutorial that is included. This will give you the understanding of positive and negative attributes to form complex objects, as well as some foundation on the materials.

As Jafo states, it is easy to use the presets, but that is how you will gain an understanding of the tools. I believe the learning curve on any of the 3D scene programs will have a similarly "steepness" to begin with.

Once you get the math part (understanding where your object is in relation to the origin coordinates) you should be on your way. You can use the mini menu (seen next to an object when selected) with the little "A" (Attributes used to set the location) on top and the "M" (Materials lab) on the bottom - to place the object in relation to the center of your scene and to assign a material to it.

Hint - There are two types of coordinates used in the 3D space:

1 = Global location expressed using the X, Y, and Z coordinates based on the center of the scene (or world) which is always 0, 0, 0.

2 = Relative location expressed using the X, Y, and Z coordinates based on the center of the object. This describes parts of an object in relation to itself (such as a persons head in relation to their center).

Other helpful items:

1 - On top of the scene you will see the words "Create", "Edit", and "Sky & Fog". Clicking on these show the tools for use.

2 - Clicking the small arrow head to the right of the words listed in #1 will invoke the presets available for those categories.

There is also a nice assortment of tutorials on the DAZ web site to get you going.

Hang in there, Lantec.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
Corky_O on Bryce, Blender, Vue, Terragen, etc. ???

has anybody tried art of illusion? Link

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
Bichur on Bryce, Blender, Vue, Terragen, etc. ???

well.., right now i´m using 3ds Max(3D Studio Max), it´s a little bit hard to know how to use it but u can find it out..

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
TYCUS on Bryce, Blender, Vue, Terragen, etc. ???

Hopefully, the content pack still comes with it, as this includes many materials to apply to your objects, terrains, and sky. The one thing I do not like about Bryce is that you cannot create an object without assigning a terrain and sky (even if it is gray, black, or white). This presents issues if you want to create say a semi-transparent (translucent) object to use as an icon, a part in a skin, or on a wall - due to the fact that reflections are rendered, and therefore the reflections are based on the assigned terrain and sky. You can export image, and then export an object mask, which will allow you to remove the extra content in the image and leave just the object - but you still have the reflections from the extra content of the original image. I hope they can change this limitation.

If you want to create a wall completely in Bryce, create parts for skins that use the materials created in Bryce (which are limitless) and reflections are not an issue, then you are good to go for fairly cheap. If the orbs, torus's, and space images that you intend to make will not be limited by the transparency issues raised above - it may be worth checking out.

As for the other programs, I do not use them.

I find that I use Photoshop and CorelDRAW as staples, and when I have time, I play around with Bryce. Learning how to create materials, and applying them in the correct fashion is - in my opinion - the hardest part of the learning curve for Bryce. The object creation and understanding the axis positions and origins (both global, and relevant) are fairly easy to grasp, especially for one such as yourself - who has used AutoCAD.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-25T00:28:26</pubDateParsed>
Corky_O on Bryce, Blender, Vue, Terragen, etc. ???
